Laurie at Mediterranean Cooking in Alaska and The Well-Seasoned Cook Susan are celebrating legumes with the ninth installment of the My Legume Love Affair event – and I am happy to join in. For the event, I chose a recipe from the BBC Good Food magazine, titled Braised peas with bacon, lentils & cod. I didn’t use cod, though, because I still had two lovely fillets of zander (or pikeperch) sitting in my freezer. I have to admit, though, that the cod on the Good Food website looks a lot better than my dish. Recently I’ve been craving Serbian Bean Soup (Pasulj) which has been an all-time favorite in my family, but funny enough no one ever bothered to make it from scratch – but we would have lunch at our favorite Yugoslavian eatery (now defunct). So I started to dig for recipes. Some, I found, use sausage, some use potatoes, some use tomato paste, some use non of these, some require bacon or smoked ribs, others will even use canned beans (yuck). Andrew from Spittoon Extra is the host of this month’s Waiter There’s Someting In My… event, and has chosen dried fruit or nuts as a theme. Since my mother provided me with a huge bag of (last year’s) organic walnuts straight from her garden two weeks ago, I hunted for an uncommon recipe to use them and came up with Sweet-Potato Walnut Burritos These completely vegetarian burritos feature a few of my favorite ingredients: walnuts, sweet potato and lentils.
