Bento 2006-10-10

Delias Gooseberry Tart

Delias Gooseberry Tart

Last week, while visiting the in-laws, we stocked up on frozen berries from their garden, mostly gooseberries and a few red currants. So, with lots of recycled ice cream boxes filled to the brim with gooseberries taking up my valued freezer space, I decided to try this recipe from Delia Smith for a Sunday afternoon treat. Gooseberry and Creme Fraiche Tart It is, in fact, deceptively simple. I chose to make an all-butter-dough since I didn’t have lard at hand and didn’t want to buy some just for one pie crust. The result was a very easy to make, wonderful flaky tart crust – but the baking time was shorter than given. Probably, if I had used a ceramic pie pan instead of a metal tin, it would have...

EBBP#6 – British Cuteness

EBBP#6 – British Cuteness

YAY! Yesterday I received my parcel from a fellow foodie blogger, participating in EBBP#6 – Euro Blogging by Post, kindly hosted by Johanna at The Passionate Cook. I waited for the morning and some better light than last night, though, to take a picture of all the goodies Jenni over at pertelote.org packed for me. (And Jenni might have infected me with a virus called Librarything, too… ) Along with the goodies came a very kind and funny letter, including some traditional British Royal gossip, and pages from a magazine featuring an interview with Giorgio Locatelli and an excerpt from his latest book - I can hardly wait to settle down with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine and read this. Thank you Jenni, this...

Candy Swap

Candy Swap

Some time ago I signed up at swap-bot.com – a service for swappers worldwide, regardless of what they want to swap. I have swapped postcards and “a cup of tea and a page from a magazine“, music on CD-R and more postcards. (You can find swaps for scrapbookers, ATCs, knitters, tea cup collectors… you name it you swap it). The latest swap I signed up for was an assorted candy swap. My parcel (the swap-bot randomizes the process of assigning swap-partners) came from UK: Instant diabetic coma! – thank you Alex for such a fun package. My husband is eager to taste all those new treats soon!

Zucchini Pickles

Zucchini Pickles

Last weekend my mother handed me one (actually, more than one) of the miniature tactical nuclear submarines she calls zucchini. I think I’ll never live to the day when my mother is going to harvest a zucchini below the size of at least a DSRV… So, flooded with zucchini of varying degrees of overripeness and tough flesh, I took one of the supposedly tender summer squashes and de-seeded and chopped it up for Zucchini Pickles The recipe uses concentrated grape juice instead of sugar. otherwise it is your run-of-the-mill standard bread-and-butter-pickle recipe. I usually fiddle with the seasonings, this time I used red onion slivers for the pickles (which were bright red when I filled the jars, I should have taken my pic then) and spices were brown mustard...

EBBP#6 – Peek-a-Boo

Johanna at The Passionate Cook is hosting the 6th installment of European Blogging By Post (thank you!), and I am two days late (again…) Monday I was busy in family business, Tuesday was a public holiday in Germany, so I’ll be heading for the post office right after finishing this blog entry featuring my parcel to a fellow foodie blogger. I hope I won’t be shocked by a parcel over 2 kilogram… my hubby has been hiding our mail scale, so I’ll find out right at the counter. What’s in it? Well… I don’t want to be a spoil-sport so I won’t tell you who is getting this parcel nor what is exactly in it, but… I packed something local something regional something typical for Germany something foreign something...
