Things to eat before you die

Petra from Chili & Ciabatta has tagged me for the Things To Eat Before You Die meme, started by Melissa of The Travelers Lunchbox.

I have seen this meme all over the foodie blogosphere by now. When I saw the BBC piece on “50 things to eat before you die”, hosted by Ainsley Harriott, I just had fun watching it and would never have thought it could start such a tsunami of blog entries. (Guess what the no. 1 food was - fish!).

Now, with way over 1200 entries on the ever growing list, I find it hard to come up with something not already on the list (although I did find a few), and I can hardly decide which way to go. Should I choose dishes, or mere pure foods? Do beverages count?

Among those already listed you can find some of my favorite must-have-tried foods, such as fungi porcini, Domori chocolate, pecorino sardo, fresh ahi tuna, or a croissant (from Lenotre in Paris, if I get to choose). It is the purity of taste and the ingredient quality which makes these foods special.

But, since they have been named before, well, here are my (other) recommendations.

  1. hotategai nigiri – nigiri sushi with coquilles St. Jacques on top
  2. flan al caramello, the traditional Spanish caramel pudding
  3. Greek wild thyme honey
  4. queso blanco, the fresh goat cheese from the Canary Islands, paired with fresh tomatoes grown there
  5. a cup of Kona coffee (don’t forget to nibble on one of the beans)

There would be more, of course… a tree-ripened hass avocado (which is, really, lightyears from the avocadoes we usually get, harvested unripe), or any dish with the distinct and superb flavor of a good chipotle chile…

I’d love to know what other cooks come up with, so I ask
